A securities filing disclosed Monday that Nvidia will backstop as much as $105 billion in financing for a new OpenAI data center in Pike County, Ohio. The credit supports an initial 4.25 gigawatts of computing capacity, with an option for 3.75 gigawatts more, and the site is expected to come online in phases starting in 2028.
Nvidia has agreed to provide up to $105 billion in financing support for a large artificial intelligence data center being developed for OpenAI in Ohio, according to a securities filing revealed on Monday, August 17, 2026. The commitment takes the form of a guarantee on lease payments, one of the largest infrastructure financing arrangements the chipmaker has undertaken to date.
The credit will underwrite an initial 4.25 gigawatts of computing capacity, with an option to add a further 3.75 gigawatts. Nvidia will also supply the compute hardware inside the facility, which is expected to come online in phases beginning in 2028. The site sits at the PORTS-Pike Technology Campus in Pike County, Ohio.
SB Energy, a SoftBank-backed developer, will build and manage the data center and lease it to OpenAI under a 20-year agreement. OpenAI holds a stake in SB Energy, and OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman was an early investor in the company. SB Energy and SoftBank have also committed to building power supply capable of supporting 10 gigawatts and investing at least $4.2 billion in the regional power system.
In a statement accompanying the release, Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang framed the arrangement around the durability of the physical site relative to the compute inside it, saying the structure allows OpenAI to repeatedly upgrade hardware as new generations deliver more capability and better economics.
The figure represents a reduction from earlier discussions. CNBC had previously reported that Nvidia was in talks to provide a backstop of up to $250 billion tied to a 10-gigawatt buildout at the Ohio location, while the Wall Street Journal reported last week that the guarantee would be cut to under $120 billion. The deal is the latest in a series of Nvidia financing maneuvers supporting the AI data center buildout, arrangements that have drawn scrutiny over so-called circular financing, in which suppliers of AI infrastructure help fund the customers buying it.
