Stripe Finalizes $7 Billion Acquisition of AI Model Gateway Startup OpenRouter

Stripe has finalized an agreement to acquire OpenRouter, a startup that helps developers switch between artificial intelligence models, for more than $7 billion, according to people familiar with the matter cited by Bloomberg. The deal values OpenRouter at more than five times the $1.3 billion valuation it carried just months ago, when the company raised a $113 million Series B round with backing from investors including Sequoia, Andreessen Horowitz, Menlo Ventures, and Alphabet's CapitalG. OpenRouter, founded in 2023, provides developers and businesses with a single access point to more than 400 different AI models, allowing them to select and switch between systems depending on cost, performance, and specific task requirements. The startup has described itself as offering a service akin to "Stripe for AI," giving customers a unified gateway that helps them avoid vendor lock-in with any single model provider. The company says it serves roughly 8 million users globally. The Wall Street Journal had previously reported that Stripe and OpenRouter were in talks, with an earlier reported price tag of around $10 billion before the two sides settled on the finalized figure. A Stripe spokesperson said the company does not comment on rumors or speculation, while OpenRouter declined to comment on the transaction. The acquisition underscores the intensifying competition among technology companies to control infrastructure layers of the AI economy, as businesses grapple with rising and unpredictable costs of running multiple AI models in production. For Stripe, best known as a payments processing company, the purchase provides a stronger foothold in the fast-growing AI sector and reflects how quickly demand has grown for tools that help companies manage AI spending across an increasingly fragmented model marketplace.
