Claude's Projects feature lets you create a persistent workspace with its own custom instructions and knowledge base, so you stop re-explaining your company's style, tone, and reference documents in every single chat. This is especially powerful for recurring tasks like drafting client reports, reviewing contracts against internal templates, or maintaining a consistent brand voice across a marketing team.

Most professionals treat every AI chat as a blank slate, pasting the same background information, style guides, and context over and over. Claude's Projects feature eliminates this friction by creating a self-contained workspace with its own chat history and knowledge base, so any document, instruction, or reference material you add is automatically available in every conversation inside that Project. To set one up, create a new Project and fill in the custom instructions field with the role, tone, constraints, and formatting rules you want Claude to follow consistently, for example a legal team could specify that all contract summaries must flag indemnification and liability clauses first. Then upload your reference materials directly into the Project's knowledge base: style guides, past reports, pricing sheets, or a glossary of internal terminology, so Claude can pull from real company content rather than generic knowledge. A concrete professional use case: a marketing manager sets up a "Brand Voice" Project, uploads the brand guidelines, three examples of on-brand social posts, and a competitor analysis document, then adds custom instructions defining the target tone and forbidden phrases. Every team member who has access to that Project can now draft new posts, and Claude will automatically apply the correct voice and reference the uploaded materials without anyone repeating instructions. This approach also scales well for collaboration: Projects can be shared with teammates who can contribute new documents or edit the instructions, effectively building a living internal knowledge base that improves over time. For teams juggling multiple clients or product lines, creating a separate Project per client or per workflow keeps each context cleanly separated, avoiding the mixing of instructions or reference files that happens when everyone uses one long, generic chat thread. The main efficiency gain is that once the setup is done, onboarding a new use case takes minutes instead of re-explaining context every session, which is particularly valuable for repetitive knowledge-work tasks like compliance reviews, customer support drafting, or financial report summarization.
