Chinese AI startup DeepSeek is finalizing a second funding round worth approximately 50 billion yuan ($7.4 billion) at a pre-money valuation of roughly 500 billion yuan ($74 billion), expected to close by the end of August. The completion of this round positions DeepSeek for a potential initial public offering on Shanghai's Star Market in 2027, marking another major milestone for the company that has emerged as a formidable competitor to Western AI labs.

DeepSeek, the Hangzhou-based artificial intelligence lab, is nearing the completion of its second major funding round at a valuation of approximately $74 billion before investment. The round targets a raise of about 50 billion yuan ($7.4 billion), with multiple sources indicating the deal is expected to close before month-end. This second round represents a significant increase from DeepSeek's first external funding round, which closed in June 2026 at a $50 billion valuation and raised $7.4 billion. The funding syndicate includes existing investors Monolith and Shixiang Capital, alongside Chinese battery manufacturer Contemporary Amperex Technology Limited (CATL). New investors in discussions include CPE, Legend Capital, and Stony Creek Capital, a semiconductor-focused private equity firm. The participation of diverse investors, including state-backed funds and corporate strategic investors, underscores the company's importance to China's AI strategy and its commercial appeal. The financing comes as DeepSeek has resumed momentum following a brief fundraising pause in late July, when founder Liang Wenfeng paused the process over frustration with leaked remarks about his views on China's AI competitiveness relative to the United States. The company has quickly moved to completion despite this interruption, reflecting strong investor demand and confidence in its technology and market position. Beyond the funding round itself, DeepSeek has begun laying groundwork for a public debut. The company plans to file for an initial public offering as early as the end of 2026, with a target listing on Shanghai's STAR Market in 2027. This would represent a historic milestone for a Chinese AI company and underscore the growing maturity of domestic AI investment and public markets in the region. DeepSeek's rapid ascent over the past eighteen months has reshaped global AI competition. The company gained international prominence in early 2025 when it released AI models that matched Western competitors' capabilities while using substantially fewer computational resources and lower costs. Recent releases including the V4 Flash model have reinforced this position, contributing to growing international interest and strategic partnerships with companies across infrastructure, robotics, and semiconductors.
