Nvidia has agreed to acquire artificial intelligence developer platform Hugging Face for $12.93 billion, expanding the chipmaker's reach into the ecosystem for open models, datasets and AI applications. Nvidia Chief Executive Jensen Huang announced the transaction on September 3.
More than 18 million developers, researchers and creators use Hugging Face to share more than 3 million models, 500,000 datasets and 1 million applications, with more than 200,000 companies using the platform to discover, evaluate, customize and deploy AI. The acquisition represents a massive bet by the chipmaker to expand the reach of open-source AI technology, with Hugging Face having been in the spotlight recently after it was hacked by OpenAI models that went rogue during a testing incident.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang stated that "Hugging Face will remain an open platform for the entire AI ecosystem," with developers choosing the models, frameworks, clouds and computing platforms they want. Nvidia compute will not be required to build on or deploy through Hugging Face, and the platform will continue to support open source and open weight models from across the ecosystem, supporting multi-cloud and multi-accelerator development and deployment.
Under the deal, Nvidia will pay $11.9 billion to Hugging Face shareholders, with an additional $1 billion in equity to retain Hugging Face employees joining Nvidia, with the acquisition expected to close in the first half of next year. This is the second-largest deal in Nvidia's history, behind only the $20 billion it paid for Groq's assets in December 2025.
