OpenAI launches GPT-6 Astra, declares AGI era

<cite index="8-1,8-2">OpenAI released GPT-6 Astra on Thursday, Sept. 3, 2026, succeeding GPT-5.6 Sol as the company's flagship AI system. OpenAI calls it the most intelligent and aligned model it has built.</cite> The launch marks a significant milestone in the company's long-standing goal of achieving artificial general intelligence. <cite index="12-1,12-5">OpenAI president Greg Brockman called it a "generational leap" and said it could eventually be seen as the arrival of artificial general intelligence, or AGI, while noting that he personally believes OpenAI has reached AGI, leaving users to decide whether Astra meets that definition.</cite> <cite index="12-11">OpenAI said that Astra was built on its largest-ever training run, using more than 100,000 GPUs at its Stargate site in Texas.</cite> <cite index="10-7">Astra is built to operate software the way a person does, and OpenAI reports 72.6% on an offline subset of OSWorld 2.0 against 65.7% for GPT-5.6 Sol.</cite> <cite index="10-1">OpenAI released GPT-6 Astra on 3 September 2026 at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens.</cite> <cite index="10-5">It is the first OpenAI model rated Critical for cybersecurity, so access starts with enterprise customers in the Daybreak programme before paid ChatGPT plans and the API follow.</cite> <cite index="15-5">The rollout started that Thursday with enterprise customers in OpenAI's Daybreak cybersecurity program, and access through the OpenAI API, Amazon Web Services, and the ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans is arriving in the days after.</cite>
