Highlight & Edit: Scoped Revisions in Canvas

ChatGPT Canvas introduced a feature that most users never discover: targeted highlighting. The traditional workflow is broken: you ask ChatGPT to fix a paragraph, it rewrites your entire document, you lose other edits. Highlighting fixes this by letting you direct edits surgically. How it works in practice: Open Canvas (via the + icon in ChatGPT's message bar). Paste or write your first draft. Once you have text in Canvas, highlight exactly the section you want to change—one paragraph, one code block, one sentence. In the chat panel next to Canvas, ask for a specific edit: "Tighten this paragraph for a C-suite audience" or "Fix the variable naming in this function." ChatGPT reads only your highlighted text, makes the targeted change, and keeps everything else untouched. The rest of your document remains completely intact. Practical example: A product manager drafts a 500-word announcement. She highlights the first paragraph (the lede) and asks: "Rewrite this for urgency—make it clear why stakeholders should care today." Canvas changes only that opening, preserving her carefully crafted supporting paragraphs. She highlights the feature list next and says "Organize these as 3 benefits instead of 6 features." Another surgical edit. No copy-paste between tools, no risk of accidentally accepting a full-document rewrite she didn't want. She completes the draft in 5 iterations instead of 15. This scales for code too. A developer highlights a function with a known bug and asks for a fix. Canvas updates only that function while preserving the imports, tests, and surrounding logic. You can also use Canvas's built-in coding shortcuts (Fix bugs, Add logs, Port to language) which all respect highlighting in the same way.
