Search & Reference Google Drive Files in Chats

The Google Drive app connects ChatGPT to files and folders your Google account can already access. Depending on the permissions you grant and the actions your workspace allows, you can search files, reference Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides, and use supported actions in your conversations. To set up the connection, Google Drive is available for connecting in the composer, the settings page, or via a banner on the home screen, or you can enable this connection in ChatGPT settings by clicking on your profile icon > Settings > Apps, then finding the Google drive app in the app directory.

Once connected, find Google Drive and select the option to connect your account, sign in to the Google account you want to use, review the Google permissions requested for the available actions, and complete Google's authorization flow and return to ChatGPT. When Google asks what ChatGPT can access, select 'See and download all your Google Drive files' before continuing. If this permission is not granted, sync setup will fail due to missing OAuth permissions.

After connecting Google Drive, you can ask ChatGPT to find or work with files you have permission to access. Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides actions are available through the Google Drive app rather than separate apps. For example, after connecting a Google Drive account that has access to your project files, try: Find my project brief in Google Drive and summarize the next steps. The Google Drive app with sync allows you to reference Google Drive links, e.g. "summarize this [Google Doc link]" as long as the Google Doc is synced and the user has permission to access it.

Practical example: You're preparing a team budget review meeting. Ask ChatGPT: "Find my Q4 budget spreadsheet in Google Drive and compare the current projections against last quarter's actuals." ChatGPT searches your Drive, accesses the file, analyzes it, and presents findings with a link back to the original source-all without leaving your chat.
