Scale Knowledge Bases 10x With Claude RAG

Build persistent AI workspaces that automatically expand capacity when your uploaded documents exceed context limits. Claude Projects now use Retrieval-Augmented Generation to handle enterprise knowledge bases-contracts, policies, codebases-without re-uploading files or losing context across conversations. Perfect for teams managing client work, research, or institutional knowledge.
Claude Projects let you upload reference documents once to a persistent knowledge base that every conversation in that project can access. As your knowledge base grows-adding client contracts, technical specs, style guides, or research papers-Claude automatically switches to RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) mode when approaching the context window limit. Instead of loading all files into memory at once, Claude intelligently searches and retrieves only relevant information for each query, expanding effective capacity by up to 10x while maintaining response quality.
To set this up: Create a new Project, upload relevant documents (PDF, DOCX, CSV, or plain text up to 30MB each), then set custom instructions describing your role and how Claude should behave. For example, if you're managing client project work, upload the client brief, style guide, and past proposals. Every chat within that project inherits these instructions and can reference all uploaded materials automatically. Claude signals when RAG activates by showing an "Indexing" indicator in the interface-this is when your knowledge base has exceeded what can fit in the model's context window, and retrieval mode handles the expansion.
The key professional advantage is searchability and structure. A critical detail buried on page 40 of a badly-named PDF works in full-context mode by accident. In RAG mode, it must be retrievable-which means clear filenames and descriptive content matter more. Best practice: upload only genuinely relevant material; a focused knowledge base retrieves more accurately than a large noisy one. Archive or delete stale documents to prevent confident-but-outdated answers.
On paid plans (Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise), RAG is automatic and free. Free users get up to five projects with standard context limits, no RAG. For teams, Projects scale across roles: support teams build a knowledge base from help documentation and past tickets; engineering teams upload API docs and code standards; consultants ground themselves in past client work. One project per clear task keeps retrieval accurate and conversations organized.
