Isolate client work with ChatGPT project-only memory

Prevent your client contexts from contaminating each other using ChatGPT's project-only memory setting. Each isolated project keeps its own chats, files, and learned context-ensuring sensitive client data, instructions, and work patterns stay separate without bleeding into other projects or your general ChatGPT chats.
ChatGPT's project-only memory is a structural isolation control that keeps a single project's conversations, files, and learned patterns completely separate from your account's global memory and other projects. When enabled at project creation, this setting creates a walled workspace-useful for agencies, consultants, and teams managing multiple clients.
To set it up: Create a new Project from the left sidebar, toggle "Project-only memory" during creation, upload your client materials (briefs, previous work, guidelines) to the project files, and start your work chats inside that project. ChatGPT will learn facts specific to that client's context-their voice, their product details, their strategic priorities-but those learned facts stay inside the project and never influence work on other clients.
Here's the critical distinction: project-only memory is the unit of isolation, not each chat within the project. If you run two clients in one project, they share the same memory layer. For true separation, create one isolated project per client. This is especially important for sensitive work-a financial consulting project and a personal project should never share context. Professionals frequently miss this: they create one "Client Work" project for multiple clients and assume project-only memory separates them. It doesn't. The project boundary is where isolation happens.
The practical workflow: Set up a project per client. Use project-only memory. Upload their brand guidelines, previous deliverables, and project briefs as reference files. Write project-level custom instructions specific to their needs. Then in each chat, work freely knowing that context stays local. When you switch to another client's isolated project, ChatGPT acts like a fresh assistant focused entirely on that client-not a shared assistant pulling in half-remembered details from unrelated work.
