Reference Files in Claude Instructions

Stop pasting context into every chat. Upload your brand guidelines, templates, and docs to a Claude Project, then reference them by name in custom instructions. Claude automatically applies them to every conversation without re-pasting. This cuts setup time by 90% for content teams managing recurring workflows.
Most professionals paste the same brand guidelines, style documents, or templates into Claude repeatedly, adding 2-3 minutes to every conversation. Claude Projects solve this with a single setup: upload your reference files once, then reference them by name in the project's custom instructions.
Here's the workflow: First, create a new Claude Project (Projects > New Project). Name it something specific-"Brand Content" or "Product Documentation." In the Files section, add all the documents you reference repeatedly: brand voice guides, style PDFs, API documentation, competitor analyses, or product specs. The limit is 200,000 tokens of uploaded documents, roughly 150,000 words.
Next, in the Project Instructions field, explicitly name each file and when Claude should use it. Example: "When writing landing pages, follow the tone in brand-voice-guide.pdf exactly. If the tone conflicts with audience-needs-research.md, tone wins." Claude will automatically reference these files in every chat within the project without you having to paste them again.
Practical example: A content team managing a SaaS product creates one "Marketing Content" project with their brand guide, competitor analysis, and customer research uploaded. Their custom instruction reads: "Use brand-voice-guide.pdf for all tone and formatting. Reference customer-personas.md to validate audience fit before suggesting changes. Cite the specific document." Now every marketer on the team starts chats in this project and gets instant consistency-no more variations between writers, no more manual pastes of the same 20-page brand doc. Setup takes 15 minutes once; it saves 2 hours per week across the team.
