Extract Structured Data from PDFs as JSON

Use Claude to convert scanned invoices, contracts, and reports into clean JSON output. Claude's vision capabilities handle messy layouts, complex tables, and multiple document formats while preserving structure for direct import into databases or spreadsheets. This eliminates manual data entry and reduces OCR fallback errors.
Claude excels at transforming unstructured document data into machine-readable JSON. Unlike traditional OCR tools, Claude understands document context-it recognizes what fields matter and handles layout variations automatically.
Start by uploading a PDF directly to Claude (via claude.ai or the API). In your prompt, specify the fields you need extracted and request JSON format: "Extract vendor name, invoice number, date, line items (description, quantity, unit price), and total from this PDF. Return as a single JSON object."
For consistent results across multiple documents, use Claude's tool-use feature to lock the output schema. Define a tool that specifies your exact JSON structure, then Claude will return extraction results matching that schema every time. For example, if you're processing 50 invoices, Claude will extract all of them with identical field names and data types.
For scanned or messy PDFs, Claude's vision layer automatically handles format variations-handwritten amounts, faded text, rotated pages. Claude flags uncertain values in the output (e.g., "confidence": 0.7), letting you review edge cases before importing. A legal team extracting clause obligations from 100+ contracts, a finance team processing vendor invoices monthly, or a researcher mining tables from academic papers can all feed documents directly to Claude and get structured JSON ready for downstream systems within minutes.
