Anthropic's draft IPO prospectus revealed a net loss of $80.7 billion in the first half of 2026, though $72 billion came from non-cash accounting charges on convertible notes. The AI company's revenues surged to $16.3 billion while compute spending jumped to $9 billion, as it prepares for a potential November IPO that could value the company up to $2 trillion.

Anthropic's financial disclosures ahead of its anticipated initial public offering have exposed the mounting costs of developing large-scale AI systems. The San Francisco-based company recorded a net loss of $80.7 billion in the first half of 2026, according to a draft IPO prospectus reviewed by The Wall Street Journal-a stark increase from the $13 billion loss in the same period a year earlier.

While the headline figure appears alarming, the vast majority of the loss stems from accounting treatment rather than cash outflows. Approximately $72 billion of the loss reflects fair-value adjustments tied to convertible notes and other financial instruments Anthropic issued to raise capital. As the company's valuation climbed, the estimated value of these instruments increased, forcing the company to book the difference as a loss on its financial statements. The remaining $8.7 billion represents actual operational losses.

The financial picture reveals a company in rapid expansion. Revenue surged to $16.3 billion in the first half of 2026, up from just $1.1 billion in the same period a year earlier-a 15-fold increase. Yet this explosive revenue growth was outpaced by spending on computing infrastructure, which nearly quadrupled to $8.9 billion, compared with $2.3 billion in H1 2025. This spending trajectory underscores the enormous capital requirements for training and serving increasingly capable AI models.

Looking ahead, Anthropic has committed to spending hundreds of billions on compute capacity. The company has signed noncancelable cloud agreements worth approximately $450 billion over the next decade with Google Cloud ($111 billion), Amazon Web Services ($110 billion), and Microsoft ($31 billion). Some estimates suggest potential total spending could reach $750 billion as cloud providers limit sales. This massive infrastructure commitment reflects Anthropic's bet-the-company approach to competing in frontier AI development.

The IPO, potentially coming as early as November, faces investor scrutiny over customer concentration, with just two customers accounting for about 20 percent of revenue in H1 2026. Some investors are reportedly adjusting valuation expectations downward to around $1.5 trillion in the public market, though original projections reached as high as $2 trillion. Anthropic's path to profitability and the economics of large-scale AI infrastructure deployment will likely influence how the broader AI sector is valued in public markets.
